One of my seniors gave me a shout-out at work recently. It felt great, but more than that, it felt humbling.
Recognition can be encouraging, but it also invites reflection. As I thought about it more deeply, I realized that moments like this are rarely about one individual. They are the result of many people working together.
Behind every success are colleagues who support you, supervisors who challenge you to grow, and friends who encourage you to keep moving forward. In my case, I immediately thought about my supervisor, who leads our department with great care, and many amazing colleagues from the Accounting team who contribute daily to our shared success.
But during my drive home, a deeper thought came to mind.
Sometimes in life we are like glass, not the light itself.
The glass may look beautiful and polished, but it is not the source of the light. The light comes from somewhere else.
Too often we praise the glass and forget the light.
For me, this reflection goes even deeper because my faith teaches me that Jesus Christ is the true light, and I am simply the lamp that carries that light.
Without Him, I would be a lamp without light.
And a lamp without light serves no real purpose.
However, even when the light shines brightly, something else matters—the condition of the glass.
If the glass becomes stained with anger, pride, self-righteousness, or selfish ambition, the light becomes harder for others to see. But when the glass is clean and clear, the brightness shines through more fully.
One thing I’ve come to appreciate in my professional life is how much the people around us help keep that glass clear. Good leadership, strong teams, and a healthy workplace culture shape us in ways we sometimes don’t even realize.
Encouragement matters. Accountability matters. Genuine care matters.
When people work together with humility and purpose, the light shines brighter for everyone.
That is why the shout-out I received meant more than just recognition. It reminded me of the people who help shape my journey and the deeper source of the light that guides my life.
For that, I am grateful—to God and to the incredible people I have the privilege of working with every day.
True leadership is not just about performance or profit. It is about people, purpose, and values.
And when organizations truly put humanity first, everyone shines a little brighter.
